Mission
Challenge mindsets of VCFers to lead integrated lives, especially in the working world.
Graduation is one of the greatest joys in life. You’ve buried yourself in books, spent endless hours in the library and scribbled copious lecture to deserve the degree you know hold. When you hurl your graduation cap high into the air and let out shouts of jubilation, your time as a student is done. You gleefully envision large pay cheques and growing bank accounts that come with working life.
Yet you cannot help but feel a sense of loss: separation from friends, no more VCF gatherings and less time to pursue your hobbies.
This is where Life Travel Planners (“LTP”) steps in the fill that void of nostalgia.
LTP is a Standing Committee within VCF designed primarily for two purposes. Firstly, it aims to help fresh graduates make a smooth transition into working life. Secondly, it also addresses pertinent ethical and religious issues that may arise in certain occupations and courses of undergraduate study.
Talks involving good speakers will be organised to inject a Christian perspective into your occupation and university course. Some general topics that may be covered include money management, choosing the right job, evangelism in the workplace etc. Other examples of fascinating issues relevant to an undergraduate may be moral dilemmas in biomedical research or ethical struggles of lawyers.
There will also be the exciting Crossroads Camp, where a speaker will be invited to educate you on how to keep your focus on the Lord after entering the workforce. It is also a great time of bonding, sharing and quality fellowship.
Hence, we welcome you to join us for these interesting discussions on how God can be relevant to what your course of study and future occupation. Please feel free also to email Jane at esotericmind87@gmail.com or Pearlyn speedingrapids@yahoo.com.sg to provide feedback or raise topics of interest.
For Graduating/Graduated Seniors check out the Graduates Christian Fellowship (email: gcfsing@gcf.org.sg) and Marketplace Christian Network where you can find likeminded brothers and sisters seeking to be salt and light inthe marketplace :)
Some Examples of LTP Talks
a) “Best practices in Biomedical research: Should the creation be a creator?”
- This basically deal with the Christian perspective towards biomedical research. Potential issues include cloning, dealing with embryos, creating life, manipulating genetics etc.
b) “Holy Humanities: Finding God in the Arts”
- This talk deals with the potential to be used by God for those majoring in social work, psychology etc. It would be ideal if the speaker can show how the other FASS subjects (e.g. Economics, Geography, History etc.) are linked to Christianity.
c) “Christian Values v. Criminal Clients: Struggles of a Christian Lawyer”
- Should Christian lawyers distort the law to defend their criminal clients? Does it matter if the criminal is repentant? What about helping a big company buy-over an SME in dire straits? How can lawyers maintain godly justice and Christian integrity in their occupation?
Talks for Graduating Students
a) “Dollars and Sense: Stewardship of Wealth and Money Management”
- As a graduate starts to earn more money, he will have to know how to manage his wealth. The talk will deal with the Biblical perspective of spending, savings and perhaps even giving to the poor.
b) “To be or not to be: God’s view towards work and choice of jobs”
- This talk will bring out the Biblical perspective towards work (Genesis 1-3?) and how to integrate God into working life. It also strives to inculcate correct Christian attitudes towards work.
c) “Being Salt and Light in the Office: Workplace Evangelism”
- Graduates tend to get caught up in the rat race but fail to appreciate the opportunities for outreach in the office. This talk aims to develop awareness and skills needed for workplace evangelism.
Graduates' Christian Fellowship (GCF)
The Graduates' Christian Fellowship (GCF) is a fellowship of Christian professionals committed to leadership in Christian thinking and initiatives, and to the provision of a Biblical voice that will impact the Church and Society. GCF was founded in 1955 by a group of graduates of VCF who sensed the need for an evangelical and inter-denominational witness among professional men and women in Singapore. The foundation of GCF is built on an understanding of godly stewardship and a passion for graduates to be Salt and Light in the world.
Currently GCF has activities that include talks, workshops or seminars and study groups organized primarily by its sectional groups and/or ministries. The Fellowship also holds an annual dinner every September.
GCF is an affiliate group of FES. Even since its inception, GCF has been active supporters of the FES student ministry. GCF has also been working with the student groups in their final-year ministry and in developing programmes to assist young graduates in their transition from student to graduate life. Currently the FES and GCF offices are located next to each other at North Bridge Centre.
