Hi, my name is Maria Fabiosa and I will be attending NUS this coming spring semester as an exchange student from Iowa State University. My dad was saved through intervaristy when he was in college and unfortunately there is no intervaristy at ISU. I was excited to hear that NUS had one and would love to get involved. I am an active member of Navigators and CRU (Campus Crusade for Christ) at my home university but would love to see what my dad found so appealing with intervaristy that ultimately lead to his conversion and as well as mine. Thanks!!

I am the general Director of Helping Hands Christian

Our Organisation focused much of our attention on students in junior and senior high schools in my country.
Is there any way we can work in affilliation?
I refer to all the facts published in the leaflets regarding the series of talks running from 18-20th March. All those stuffs are based on the presumption that the Bible is the truth. The question is whether the Bible can be relied for the truth. I noticed that there so many contradictions in the Bible.
For example, refer to Exodus Chapter 21, verse 20;
If a man beats his male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies as a direct result, he must be punished, but he is not to be punished if the slave gets up after a day or two, since the slave is his property.
Isnt this ridiculous? A repulsive statement, isnt it? Does God promote slavery? I dont know, but in this context, assuming the Bible is the Truth, what else can this statement convey to us other than the fact that God is an advocate of slavery.
Only the glorious side of the Bible is promoted. And more, priests and pastors usually skip these aspects of the Bible while focussing on those issues people like to hear. I’ve gone to many churches and I know this. I feel that more attention should be given to these facts in the Old Testament. After all, a balanced view is needed. Little is made known to the public about all the gruesome acts and horried atrocities in the Old Testament.
Due to the limitations of this discussion, I am open to more opinions and views.
The Bible makes it very clear that we are to send the angels out to fight for us, for they have much more power than us mere mortals. For all the problems that we face are orchestrated by the evil unseen principalities and powers, which seeks constantly to destroy us.
The Lord said to me, “ that one of His angels has enough power to deal with all my troubles,” and yet He assures me that He has multitudes ready to swing into action on our behalf, when we give the command for them to fight. Have you commanded them today to fight for you?
The Lord recently has spoken to me, and said, “Where my angels are, there is my presence.” He said angels must fight the powers of darkness, man cannot defeat such powers, angels will rescue you from all evil.
Never ask an angel for help ,never pray to them, never seek to converse with them, unless they speak to you a message that has been given to them by our Lord. Angels are servants of God and His children. God has provided strength for us by these angelic beings.
When Christ was on this earth in His human form He needed strength, just like we do today, and God sent one of His angels to strengthen Him. So that He could obtain salvation for us.
When you need strength, then command angels to bring you strength from your heavenly Father, in fact you can command angels to bring anything that you have asked your Father for. For example, health, wealth, deliverance, peace, etc.
Now, some people are very confused about pictures or statues of angels, thinking that it is forbidden in the Bible to look upon such things, but in fact what the Bible says is that we must not bow down and worship images. For these visual aids actually help us to see that there is more to this world than the physical realm.
Bible tells us that our warfare is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers. So, we must use the angelic powers from God, to deal with these unseen powers by commanding angels.
I hope that you use these spiritual warfare secrets that the Lord has shown me. Once you begin to enter this realm of believing there is no going back, you must send angels out every day, to fight the evil spirits of infirmities, which is sickness and disease, the spirit of uncleanliness, which is the evil lusts, in mind and deed.
The spirit of poverty, which are evil attacks on your finances, and anything else that you could possibly think of where you need help.
Most important of all, every day we must repent, and live in the victory, that Christ Jesus has saved us.
I used to attend Intervarsity Christian Fellowship in college while I was a student in Illinois. Now I graduated and is working in NUS. I wanted to say hi and also wish to know if there is any opportunity that I can still join or support some of your ministry. It will be great if there is a bible study that I can attend too.
Regarding the issue of slavery posted on March 20th, 2008 by Teik Chuan, I think the quote from Exodus Chapter 21, verse 20 is insufficient to be used to conclude that “God is an advocate of slavery”. Here are some of my thoughts on this issue.
If Exodus chapter 19 till 21 is surveyed quickly, we learned that Exodus 21 was likely written as more detailed explanations of the Ten Commandments given to Moses on Mount Sinai. One of the possible purposes of giving the Commandments to the Israelite was to set them apart to be Holy people choosen by a Holy God. I am not an expert of history, but I believe that these Laws were very counter-cultural at the time for the Israaelites, who were living among people like Amorites, Hittites, and Perizzites, where severe immorality and hideous crimes were common place.
Another purpose of the Commandments was probably to teach the Israelites about God. One characteristic of God is that He is Compassionate yet Just [Please refer to Exodus 34:6-7], and we can see these characteristic of God shown through the Laws in Exodus.
Back to Exodus 21:20 to illustrate, the fact that a man will be purnished if he beats his slave to death actually showed God’s Justice. This, compared to practices of other races at that time (which might be just no punishment for killing slaves, since slaves were considered property instead of human by many anyway), actually called the Israelites to be responsible people that value human life.
As for Exodus 21:21 - “but he is not to be punished if the slave gets up after a day or two, since the slave is his property.”, this apparently contradictory verse likely showed, on the other hand, God’s mercy for the Israelites. Since the Israelites were still learning to be God’s people, not punishing the slave owner was a grace given to him by God. Understanding this sentence with our current lens probably provoked tremendous anger, but bear in mind that not too long ago before the American Civil War, the legality of slavery was still being debated and fought about!
Therefore, from looking at Exodus 21:20-21 only, we cannot conclude that God promotes slavery. In fact, if we just look a few lines before in Exodus 21:2, we see that God actually commanded the Israelites to release their slaves after they have served for seven years! That verse clearly showed God’s love for the slaves (who might not even be Israelites!).
A common pitfall in bible reading happens when a selected verse is read and its meaning is simply fitted with our own understanding without proper hermeneutics and knowledge about the history and culture of that time. No Worries! Good exegesis is often possible when done in a group of people guided by the Holy Spirit [John 16:13], so joining a fellowship and bible study group will definately help you.
Ultimately, we learned from New Testament that God sent His Son to die in order to fulfill the Laws[Matthew 5:17]. Laws condemed us and was powerless to change us due to our sinful nature. And therefore, God wanted to change our heart and make us slaves to righteousness in Christ [Romans 6].
And lastly, it is not that the glorious side of the bible is often protrayed and the bad were covered, but pastors often focus on the New Testament where the climax and the ultimate Truth was revealed by Jesus. (as seen also in previous paragraph.)
Good day to all of you! I’m Jacky from the Philippines. I am a member of IFES in our campus (University of the Philippines, Diliman), which is known as State Varsity Christian Fellowship.
